therapist/Clinical Social Worker
Most of us have experienced at least one mild trauma that shifted our perceptions of ourselves or the world negatively, leaving us feeling vulnerable and open. I believe that working side by side with a therapist, and having choices of interventions, can create a safe environment, where sharing vulnerabilities doesn't evoke fear. I believe in discovering together which solutions will help you through your challenges. We can focus on how your personal experiences have and continue to affect your life and/or just focus on the solutions that you need today. With support, I believe that anyone can shift a challenging situation.
Theoretical Approach to therapy and Change:
I listen to what brings you into counseling, and together we come up with a plan to help you reach your goals. All of your needs and wants as a person are an important part of your counseling journey, and I make sure to address you as an entire person. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), so my main therapeutic approach is the Adaptive Information Processing Model. My other main therapeutic approaches are strengths-based, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy. I vary my approach based on what you need at any specific time during our sessions.
Experience and Training:
I have worked in the mental health field for over 10 years, in multiple settings with multiple different populations. I have specific training in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and am trained in EMDR. EMDR is my treatment of choice for trauma or traumatic events. I choose CBT as an evidence-based treatment for depression and anxiety, and Motivational Interviewing for anything that requires a change in your life. Over all of this, I come from a strengths-based perspective that looks at the unique strengths and resiliencies of you as a person.
I make my home in the foothills with my family including various animals and my two kids. I find peace in nature and the slower pace of life. My extended family remains in northern Minnesota, where I grew up on a farm, although I now call Colorado home. I became a social worker/therapist because of my passion for helping others in all walks of life. My clients continue to inspire and challenge me everyday to live a more fulfilling life.
