Meet our Parent Support Group Facilitator:

Hi! I’m Heather Hyland, an experienced therapist and group facilitator but most importantly a parent! I specialize in supporting parents, neurodivergent individuals, and families navigating children with complex emotional and behavioral needs. My goal is to create a space where parents feel understood, supported, and empowered to show up for their neurodivergent children in meaningful ways.

How Does the Group Work?

Each group session explores the real-life dynamics that come up for parents, whether it’s worry, frustration, grief, or moments of feeling stuck. When difficult emotions surface, your group facilitator will guide the group through these moments with care and intention. Helping you deepen your understanding of your reactions and develop more confidence in how you respond to your child and yourself.

This process strengthens your sense of connection within the group while building practical emotional skills that support you outside of it. Over time, you’ll begin to feel more grounded, more capable, and more supported as you navigate the complexities of parenting a neurodivergent child.

What to expect from a Parent Support Group:

Small Groups:

Your Parent Support Group cohort will be small, up to 6 people per group. This is so you can get the most out of your group experience. A small group also gives you a chance to receive direct feedback and make

Closed Group:

We want you to connect in meaningful ways to your other group members. So, the Parent Support Group is not designed as a drop-in group. You will see the same people in your group each week. The groups are ongoing and new members are added as openings become available.

Meets Weekly:

We know it is a big commitment to attend a weekly group and we also believe this format will help you reach your goals more quickly. We ask that group members commit to four consecutive weeks to get comfortable and have an opportunity to explore themes more deeply. If you decide the group is not a fit after that time, we are happy to help you find a more appropriate option.

Support Group:

Our group facilitators strive to maintain a positive and supportive group atmosphere for everyone in our Parent Support Group. Come together to talk with others who actually understand what you're going through! In this group, we will discuss topics such as learning how to respond to your child’s behaviors in a caring, positive, and effective way. We also talk about how to navigate school systems, medical providers, family dynamics, and ways to improve communication between partners.

Online Group:

Our Parent Support Group is an online group. So that means that the day of your group session you will be sent a login link and all you need to do to join is to click the link. We know that online groups offer the flexibility you need while cutting down on your commute time especially as a parent. Please ensure you have a safe and confidential space to join the group session.

Still unsure if our Parent SUpport group can help?

It may seem odd to do group counseling for parenting concerns. And we get it, groups can be intimidating! Just the thought of opening up to a bunch of people you don't know can also be anxiety-provoking. But we guarantee that you are not the only one feeling like this. Every other person in the group is also nervous to get started and meet others in the group. Because of that, we talk about our anxiety in the group itself, which is one way to promote connections between group members.

Research shows that group counseling is as effective as individual counseling for a variety of issues, including ADHD. We've even written articles on this. Read our blog 3 Ways Group Counseling Can Improve Your Relationships.

If you're still unsure and have more questions about our Parent Support Group, you can also contact us for a free 20-minute phone consultation. We can answer any questions you have about this group and determine if this group will be the best fit for you or if individual counseling may also be recommended.
