Therapy

for women

why therapy for women's issues?

As a woman, you have unique needs, wants and desires that shape your life, your relationships, and your experiences. The term Women’s Issues is a catch-all for a variety of topics that affect women in particular. Perhaps you are noticing patterns in your relationships that you want to change, or you have experienced trauma related to the birth of a child. Or maybe you are struggling with the various emotions that can be experienced with infertility, or are postpartum and having intense anxiety or depression. Possibly you have had a miscarriage, and your grief is overwhelming. Regardless of your particular experience, you feel at a loss to manage your emotions, change your patterns, or make sense of what is happening.

Do any of these symptoms describe you?

  • No matter how hard you try, your relationships don't work out

  • You feel overly emotional about any little thing

  • You had a recent break-up or divorce

  • Your birth experience wasn't what you thought it would be

  • A traumatic birth and/or your child was/is in the NICU

  • You experienced a miscarriage and/or fetal loss

  • Overwhelming grief

  • You are pregnant and your emotions are all over the place

  • Excessive mood swings or anxiety while postpartum

  • You are sad and depressed after giving birth and think you shouldn't be

  • Due to your past trauma, you are having problems in relationships

  • You are having issues with fertility and trying to get pregnant

Women experience and view the world differently than men, in general, and we tend to feel emotions more deeply. Maybe others are saying to you "get over it" and "why aren't you happy?" or even "everything happens for a reason". While well-intentioned, these sentiments aren't helpful to you. You may be experiencing emotions that you didn't know you had, or are sad when you "should" be happy. Your depression, or grief, or anxiety, may be out of control and affecting not only you, but others around you. Your symptoms, while unique to you and your own experience, are treatable. You can feel better.

types of women's issues

There are many different types of women’s issues. Some unique matters that women face include:

  • Relationships – in general, women seek out assistance and change regarding their current and past relationships more than men do. We tend to internalize our emotions more and even blame ourselves more for things going wrong in relationships. Relationship counseling can help identify patterns that lead to issues in your relationships, change those patterns, and move you towards healthy relationships.

  • Miscarriage/fetal loss grief – Pregnancy loss at any point during your pregnancy can trigger powerful emotions such as depression, guilt, hopelessness, and anxiety. Processing your grief after a miscarriage or fetal loss can help you open up about your emotions and, eventually, move forward in your life.

  • Birth trauma – Also known as perinatal PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), occurs when there is any sort of trauma associated with your child’s birth. We all expect our births to be “normal” and when there is a deviation, such as having a premature baby, your baby having to spend time in a hospital’s NICU, or even having a C-section when you are set on having a “natural” birth experience, we can experience a mix of complicated and unfamiliar emotions. â€‹Therapy can help you process your emotions and tell your story, all of which lead to healing.

  • Pregnancy and Postpartum – Postpartum anxiety and depression are the most common mood changes that women experience both during pregnancy and postpartum, or after giving birth. These feelings can cause women to not care adequately for themselves, or even for their family. Counseling for perinatal mood issues can help stabilize emotions and get you back on track towards your own self-care and that of your child(ren) and family.

  • Infertility – the pain of infertility struggles and the associated emotions during your reproductive health journey can become intense and taxing, affecting not only you as a woman but also your relationship. Fertility counseling can help you cope with the unknowns, explore your treatment options, and manage your emotional pain and grief.

Women tend to have associated anxiety, depression or grief along with any of the above experiences. Even after you've giving yourself time to adjust to your "new normal", you may still be having strong emotions that are difficult for you to control. Any of these above issues affects you as a person and those around you. The good news is, women's issues are fully treatable. Therapy for Women at Catalyss Counseling can help you understand what is going on within yourself and how to regain your sense of balance.
