Located in Englewood, Colorado, Catalyss Counseling recently launched an Affordable Counseling Program to provide quality mental health services at lower rates. As a Master’s level intern therapist who offers services through this program, I thought I would take a minute to answer some frequently asked questions about what Affordable Counseling is and how it works.
What is Affordable Counseling?
Affordable Counseling offers quality psychotherapy from intern therapists at budget-friendly rates. Rates are in part determined by the therapist’s level of experience and specialization. Because Affordable Counseling is provided by pre-licensed Master’s level interns, their services are available at a lower price point.
Is it as good as finding a provider through insurance?
Insurance companies require an official diagnosis for payment, and they often limit the number of sessions allowed. A lower cost to you means that you can access the care that is most appropriate for you, without the requirement of a reported diagnosis. It also saves you the time of finding an in-network provider or the headache of filing paperwork yourself.
What is a Master’s level intern?
A Master’s level intern therapist is someone who is completing an internship as the final phase of a graduate program in counseling or social work. These students have completed extensive coursework, training, and have demonstrated the necessary skills to provide psychotherapy under supervision.
What does supervision entail?
The Master’s level intern therapist meets with a supervisor at least once a week between client sessions to discuss how the therapist can work with their clients most effectively. These discussions are based on the unique stories, experiences, strengths, challenges and goals that each client brings into therapy. Supervisors lend their experience and expertise in specialty areas such as anxiety, depression, stress, grief, parenting, postpartum, and trauma, to name a few.
What credentials does a supervisor have?
A supervisor is a therapist who has met the state’s requirements for education and experience in counseling to gain their licensing credential, plus additional training and experience to become an approved supervisor. A supervisor must hold an active license in the state of Colorado to provide supervision.
What counseling services are provided through the Affordable Counseling Program?
What is not provided through Affordable Counseling?
There are certain clinical interventions that require additional training that an intern therapist may not yet provide, for example, EMDR.
What are the benefits of working with a therapist intern?
You will be working with someone who is highly trained and motivated to provide you with quality care tailored to you.
A therapist intern is trained based on the latest research and best practices
You have the additional benefit of getting supervision from a very experienced counselor. In truth, you’re kind of getting 2 therapists for the price of one!
Availability to be seen within a week (no waitlists!)
In-person or online sessions
Money leftover to cover other essential expenses
The relationship you have with your therapist is one of the most important factors in therapy outcomes. That relationship combined with the therapist’s education, training experience, motivation, and expert support through supervision will provide you with quality care that is tailored to you.
Talking with an intern therapist will help you feel seen and understood, which in and of itself can provide relief from feelings of stress, overwhelm, and isolation. You can expect to feel cared for and supported as you move toward goals such as improved mood, reduced stress, greater confidence, clearer sense of purpose, calmer mind, and more. A therapist intern will be your professional partner and collaborator as you take this step toward the life you deserve.
