Finding a therapist can take a lot of time and effort. And, it can be a daunting process to find one that is aligned with everything on your wishlist. So, things you might be considering so it feels like a good personality fit, are if the therapist is located within a convenient travel distance, or offers virtual appointments if that's what you’re looking for. While those are all important factors during the search for a therapist, it can also be especially challenging when it comes to finding a counselor that is compatible with your budget for therapy. Therapy is a valuable tool and resource for supporting and maintaining mental and emotional wellness. And, it can be something that feels out of reach or a little outside of our budget each month. There are various resources for affordable counseling. Below are a few tips for finding a new therapist who fits within your budget and may be more affordable than some options.
Contact Local University Clinics
Prior to working with Catalyss Counseling, I saw clients at my university’s counseling center at Regis University. We have many openings for clients at various days and times throughout the week at a low fee. We had many clients that would not have been able to afford weekly therapy at another clinic or practice, but this option was both accessible and approachable.
Ask Therapists If They Offer a Sliding Scale or Pro-Bono Services
If you find a therapist online through a directory, referral from a friend, or otherwise, it can’t hurt to reach out and see what options might be available for lower fee services. Ask if they offer a sliding scale or income-based rate—or if they might offer pro-bono services for special circumstances.
Use a An Online Directory
There are several wonderful directories out there that can be useful tools if you’re trying to find a new therapist. Some popular ones include Therapy Den and Psychology Today. These platforms allow you to search for therapists based on your primary concerns (i.e. anxiety or depression) as well as rates, insurance coverage, and more.
Ask A Trusted Medical Provider
If you have a primary care physician, an OB-GYN, or even a chiropractor that you trust, they may have some good resources for you regarding affordable counseling. It’s worth a call or quick email through their secure online system to a medical provider to see if they have a good, affordable therapist they can recommend to you.
Do an Online Search for Affordable Counseling Options
Perhaps you just want to do a quick Google search and get a list of names of providers who offer affordable counseling. This can be a nice, easy way to find a therapist who fits into your budget. However, be wary that who you actually choose as a therapist is someone who actually offers affordable counseling.
Check Out a Support Group
Group therapy can be a wonderful way to get consistent mental health support that is offered at a low (or sometimes free!) fee. I’m a big believer in the power of group therapy—in fact, I wrote a blog about it recently that you can read right here. It can also be a great way to find support for a specific concern like grief or a specific experience like postpartum motherhood at a rate that feels more attainable than individual counseling.
