How Therapy Helped Me When My Anxiety Took Over

I know how hard it can be when anxiety takes over. For me, it often felt like I was barely holding it together on the outside, while inside, my mind was constantly spinning with worry. Every “what if” scenario played out in my head, over and over again.

Anxiety has a way of magnifying everything. Even when I told myself I was overthinking, I couldn’t seem to stop. Replaying conversations or worrying about things that might never even happen. It wasn’t just stress, it felt like I was trapped in this cycle with no clear way out.

The Constant Cycle of Racing Thoughts

My anxiety shows up as racing thoughts, sleepless nights, and an inability to feel truly present. I would replay conversations in my head and analyze every word I said or the other person said in order to determine underlying conflict or issues. The main thing being my worry for how others perceived me. I’d run through worst-case scenarios about things that hadn’t even happened and probably never would. My mind never felt like a safe place to be.

Even in moments of stillness, I couldn’t rest. That tight feeling in my chest lingered making it hard to relax. I knew I wanted to feel better, I didn’t quite know how to quiet that voice in my head. It felt like my brain had been hijacked by fear and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t regain control.

Thinking Anxiety Was “Just Normal”

For years, I believed this was just how life was supposed to feel. I thought everyone must deal with the same inner chaos and maybe I was just less capable of handling it. I worried that if I talked about what I was experiencing, people would think I was being dramatic or overly sensitive. After all, I’d been told to “just relax” or “stop worrying so much” for most of my life.

That belief kept me stuck. I minimized my symptoms and convinced myself I didn’t need support. But deep down I knew I was struggling. It wasn’t until I finally admitted my feelings to my therapist that I was able to finally understand the depths of anxiety and feel validated.

Discussing Anxiety in Therapy

When I first opened up about my anxiety in therapy, I was nervous because it’s always scary to say your feelings out loud. My whole life my anxious tendencies were downplayed by my family so telling a stranger didn’t feel any better. But my therapist immediately made me feel safe by validating my experiences with anxiety and normalizing the struggles. She didn’t judge me or tell me to “well, lot’s of people deal with that”. While it is true that lots of people struggle with anxiety, she chose to listen to my version. For the first time I felt like all the anxiety I had felt over the years was not just dismissed as me being difficult.

In our sessions, I began to identify thought patterns that were fueling my anxiety. She taught me grounding techniques and ways to interrupt the spiral before it took over. I learned how to slow my breathing and refocus the fears that used to consume me. Therapy didn’t erase my anxiety and I don’t think it ever will, but it gave me the tools and support to manage it in a better way.

Small Steps That Made a Big Difference

The progress I made in therapy didn’t happen overnight, but the small wins added up. I stopped avoiding plans and conversations. I felt more in control and less prone to an anxiety spiral. Therapy gave me the permission I needed to care for myself and prioritize my mental health.

I began to recognize anxiety for what it was, not a flaw in me, but a response to the world that I could learn to understand and navigate. With the right tools and support, I found that I could feel grounded again.
